Let’s Get Hitched

Us

About a year and a half ago you may remember we had a big fancy party at a country club. We had a dj and a catered meal. Jaime had a pretty dress and I wore a new suit. We’ve been laboring under the impression that what happened that day was a wedding, meaning; we got married. So for a year and half we’ve been acting like a married couple.

When we talked with Father Steuderman though, we found out we were mistaken. The state of Massachusetts says we’re married but apparently, God ain’t buying it. Father Steuderman made it pretty clear that he’d really like for us to get married in the church if he’s going to baptize Aidan. He tells us it will only take a few minutes, we can do it after mass, and all we need is our baptism certificates. We figure we did it once, so why not.

Now I find it kind of funny that we’re getting married in a two minute ceremony after a 4:00 mass on some random Saturday. If we had gone to the church before we got married and asked to have a big wedding in the church, we would have caught all kinds of crap. They would have drilled us about why we hadn’t been going to church, made us join the parish, come to mass every Sunday for a year, take classes, and who knows what else. Instead, we get married outside the church first before asking. Now all of a sudden, all we need is a certificate and a second dime in the parking meter and we’re hitched all legal like in the eyes of God. The church is funny sometimes.

There’s something very ironic about that statement. Thou shalt not kill being one of the big commandments and all ;)

Well, you know what I meant. I wouldn’t really have “killed” but I would have loved to get married in the church.
